First-Time Movers: Everything You Wish Someone Had Told You

The Budget Reality Check

First-time movers consistently underestimate costs. Beyond the move itself, budget for: first and last month's rent, security deposits, utility connection fees ($50–$200), new locks or lock rekeying ($100–$250), cleaning supplies, basic tools, and all the small essentials you never think about until you need them - shower curtains, toilet paper, dish soap, garbage bags, light bulbs. A good rule of thumb: budget an extra $500–$1,000 beyond your moving costs for immediate setup expenses.

What to Buy vs. What to Skip

Don't rush to furnish everything at once. Focus on essentials first and add items gradually as your budget allows:

  • Buy immediately: Bed/mattress, basic cookware, towels, cleaning supplies, first aid kit
  • Buy within first month: Couch, dining table, lamps, storage solutions
  • Can wait: Wall art, decorative items, specialty kitchen gadgets, extra furniture
  • Skip entirely: Anything "just in case" - wait until you actually need it

Setting Up Utilities & Services

Schedule utility connections at least one week before move-in day. You'll need: electricity (contact your local hydro provider), gas (Enbridge in Ontario), water (usually included with rent), internet (compare providers - don't default to the most expensive), and renter's insurance (highly recommended, typically $20–$40/month). Set up mail forwarding with Canada Post at least 5 business days in advance.

Surviving Your First Night

Pack a dedicated "first night" bag that stays with you (not on the truck): phone charger, toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, sheets and pillow, a towel, basic snacks, paper towels, toilet paper, and a multi-tool. Make your bed the first thing you do - having a comfortable place to sleep transforms an anxious first night into a genuine celebration of your new chapter.
