The Complete Guide to Moving Into (or Out of) an Apartment
Building Rules You Must Know
Most apartment buildings and condos have specific move-in/move-out policies. Contact your building management at least 2 weeks in advance to understand: designated moving hours (typically 8am–5pm weekdays), elevator reservation requirements, loading dock access, security deposit for common area protection, and any prohibited items.
Failure to follow these rules can result in fines, refused access, or damage charges. Get everything in writing - a confirmation email from management is your proof of compliance.
The Elevator Booking Strategy
In high-rise buildings, the elevator is your bottleneck. Book the freight elevator (if available) for your entire moving window. If only passenger elevators exist, you'll likely need a reserved elevator with pads installed. Time your booking generously - a 3-bedroom apartment move typically needs 4–6 hours of continuous elevator access. Running over your booking can result in additional fees and conflicts with other residents.
Navigating Narrow Hallways & Stairwells
Measure your furniture and your doorways, hallways, and stairwell widths before moving day. The most commonly stuck items are king mattresses, L-shaped sofas, and dining tables. Your options for tight spaces:
- Disassemble everything possible - bed frames, tables, desks, bookshelves
- Remove doors from hinges to gain an extra 2 inches of clearance
- Stand mattresses on their side and angle them through doorways
- For truly impossible items, professional movers may use hoisting equipment through windows or balconies
Protecting Your Security Deposit
Take dated, timestamped photos and video of every room, wall, floor, and fixture in both your old and new apartment on moving day. Document any pre-existing damage in the new unit immediately and email it to your landlord within 24 hours. Use protective floor runners, door frame pads, and corner guards during the move. These simple precautions can save you hundreds in deducted damages.
